What's Covered by Your Flooring Warranty?

Most new flooring comes with a manufacturer's warranty on the flooring itself. When Carpetime installs it, you also get our warranty on the installation. Here's what each one covers, what neither one covers, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Our installation warranty

When Carpetime sells and installs your flooring, we warrant the installation labor and workmanship for one year from the date of installation. If something goes wrong because of how the floor was installed, we'll come back and make it right.

This warranty covers installations scheduled and billed through Carpetime and performed by our installation crews. It doesn't cover installations where the customer hired and paid an installer directly, even if we recommended that installer.

For projects outside the Grand Valley, our installation warranty applies the same way. Because of the extra travel, warranty service calls outside the Grand Valley carry a trip charge to cover the mileage.

Our installation warranty is part of a completed, paid-in-full project. If your balance isn't paid within 30 days of installation, Carpetime reserves the right to decline warranty service on that installation.

Product warranties come from the manufacturer

Carpetime doesn't warranty the flooring material itself. Product warranties come from the manufacturer, and their length and terms vary by brand and product. Your sales representative can give you the specific warranty for any product you're considering, and we encourage you to ask before you buy. We can also provide the manufacturer's specs, care and installation information on request.

One thing many people don't realize: even when a manufacturer approves a defect claim, the coverage often doesn't pay for everything. Costs like new baseboards, moving furniture and appliances, and sometimes the full cost of tearing out and reinstalling may not be covered. We'd rather you know that up front.

Material sold as-is

Sometimes we sell flooring that doesn't carry a manufacturer's warranty, such as special buys on carpet or turf and pieces from our bone pile. These can be a great value, but they're sold as-is, with no product warranty. When material is sold as-is, we'll tell you clearly before you buy.

If Carpetime installs as-is material, our one-year installation warranty still applies, as long as it's clear the problem was caused by the installation and not the material.

Who the warranty covers

Our installation warranty applies to primary residences and commercial installations. It covers the original purchaser and doesn't transfer if the property is sold. Rental properties, including vacation rentals, are reviewed case by case, because tenant use adds variables we can't control.

What causes flooring problems

When there's a problem with a floor, the cause almost always falls into one of three categories, and the category decides who is responsible for fixing it:

  • Material defect: a flaw in the product itself, such as a manufacturing defect in the carpet, plank or finish. This is covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

  • Installation issue: a problem caused by how the floor was installed. This is covered by our one-year installation warranty.

  • Site or use conditions: problems caused by the environment the floor is in, or how it's used and cared for, such as water damage, leaks, flooding, or moisture coming up through a concrete slab or crawlspace. These generally aren't covered by either warranty.

Sometimes the cause isn't obvious at first. When that happens, we'll look into it honestly with you and, when needed, bring in the manufacturer.

How to protect your product warranty

Manufacturers set installation and care and maintenance guidelines for their products, and both must be followed for the product warranty to apply. We follow the installation guidelines, and we won't install over a subfloor that doesn't meet requirements, even if a customer offers to sign a waiver. After installation, following the care and maintenance guidelines is up to you, and we're happy to provide them for your product.

If you have a problem

Start by contacting the sales representative you worked with. They know your job and can usually get things moving quickly. If the issue isn't being resolved to your satisfaction, Carpetime's owner, Mark Ledebur, is happy to work with you directly.

  • If it's an installation issue, we'll get the installer back out at the earliest available opening.

  • If it's a material issue, we'll contact the manufacturer and work with their sales representatives and claims department on your behalf, so you don't have to deal with them on your own. The manufacturer makes the final decision on a material claim and sets its own timeline, but we'll stay involved and keep you informed.
