The flooring, pad or underlayment, standard installation, and transitions between rooms. Removing your old floor, subfloor repairs, stairs, and moving furniture or appliances are priced separately. You'll find those under Extra costs.

How many square feet?
A rough number is fine. We measure exactly at your in-home visit.
Every job needs extra material for cuts and seams. 10% covers most rooms for both carpet and hard surfaces; diagonal or herringbone layouts need more. Exact quantities are confirmed at your site measure.

Good, better, best: what you get at each level
Every flooring type comes in a range of quality levels. The estimator lets you pick one, and here's what the difference means in practice.
Good
Solid everyday quality at the lowest price. Builder-grade carpet, entry-level LVP with a thinner wear layer. A smart pick for rentals, basements, and rooms that don't see heavy traffic.
Better
Thicker, softer carpet and LVP with a stronger wear layer and better warranties. The best balance of look, lifespan, and price for most homes.
Best
Premium lines with the richest looks, widest planks, and longest warranties. Worth it for main living areas you plan to enjoy for years. Some specialty products run above the ranges shown.
Pad and underlayment choices
For carpet, the price table above includes our standard 7/16" 6 lb pad. In the estimator, pad is shown as its own line so you can see exactly what it adds: standard pad is $0.34 per square foot, and SmartCushion, a thicker, denser 1/2" 8 lb pad with a built-in moisture barrier, is $0.74, about $0.40 more. For laminate, MoistureGuard underlayment is standard, Sound Solution is a quieter upgrade for upstairs rooms, and some laminates come with pad already attached. Sheet vinyl over a wood subfloor needs a new underlayment. (The subfloor is the 3/4-inch plywood on your floor joists; underlayment is the thinner layer we install between the subfloor and your new floor.) Our options are CertiPly at $3.35/sq ft or Matrix at $3.70/sq ft, installed. Buying material only? CertiPly is $1.65/sq ft and Matrix $2.00/sq ft, sold in full sheets. Over a sound concrete slab, no underlayment is needed.
Lifetime cost vs. upfront price
The cheapest floor today isn't always the cheapest over time. A budget carpet may need replacing in 5–7 years, while a mid-grade LVP or engineered hardwood can last 15–25 years with proper care. When comparing options, ask how long a product is expected to last, not just what it costs today.

A note on Grand Valley conditions
Our dry, high-desert climate matters. Low humidity can make solid hardwood shrink and gap, which is why we recommend engineered hardwood here instead. Homes on a concrete slab also need different prep than homes with a crawlspace or basement, often including a vapor barrier. We take this into account in our estimates, which is why a Grand Junction quote can look different from a national online calculator.
Our installation process
We check the floor before tearing anything out
Before removing baseboards, tack strip, or hard flooring, we pull back carpet and check the floor for level. If it needs more prep than expected, you'll get a more detailed prep estimate and can decide what to do, including staying with carpet.
We agree on the layout first
Before installation, we'll review which direction your flooring will run and where seams will fall, and ask you to sign off. Your installer may weigh in, too.
Floors must meet level requirements
Most hard surface flooring must be flat within about 1/8" over 6 feet, or 3/16" over 10 feet. We can't install until the floor meets the manufacturer's requirements, which is why we budget for prep.
Some flooring needs to acclimate
Certain products need to sit in your home for about 24 hours before installation, and most require normal indoor temperature and humidity before and after.
Transitions may be required
Many customers prefer no strips between rooms. When the manufacturer's installation guidelines call for them, they're required. Large rooms also need expansion space around the edges.
Moisture barrier on concrete
Floating floors like LVP, laminate, and engineered hardwood require a moisture barrier over concrete. Skipping it voids the manufacturer's warranty, so we include it.
Why flooring quotes can differ
Two quotes for the same house can be thousands of dollars apart, and usually it's not because one company is honest and the other isn't. Most of the gap comes from what each quote includes. When you compare, check whether each one covers:
- Removal and disposal of your old floor
- Floor prep: patching, leveling, or new underlayment
- Extra material for cuts (waste), usually around 10%
- Pad or underlayment, and which grade
- Transitions, baseboards, stairs, and trap doors
- Moving furniture, appliances, and toilets
- Sales tax and any trip charge
- Product grade: two "LVP" quotes can be for very different wear layers and warranties
A quote that leaves some of these out will look lower at first, then grow once the work starts. Where Carpetime lands: we're rarely the lowest first number, because our estimates spell out these items up front. Compared line for line, most customers find our pricing fair for the Grand Valley.
Is it worth it?
Honest answers to the questions we hear most. Sometimes the answer is "not for your situation."
LVP instead of carpet?
Worth it in kitchens, baths, basements, entries, and homes with pets or young kids, where spills and wear are constant. Carpet is still the better choice for bedrooms and upstairs rooms where you want warmth, quiet, and a lower price.
The Best level instead of Good?
Worth it for main living areas in a home you plan to stay in for years. For rentals, a home you're selling soon, or a spare room that sees little traffic, Good is often the smarter buy.
Is the SmartCushion pad upgrade worth it?
If you have pets, kids, or ever spill a glass of wine, yes. SmartCushion has a built-in moisture barrier that helps resist spills and pet accidents from soaking through to the pad, so they're easier to clean up. Our standard pad doesn't have one. SmartCushion is also thicker and denser, giving your carpet firmer support underfoot that helps it hold up longer.
Engineered or solid hardwood?
In our dry climate, engineered hardwood is the better value. It gives you real wood on top and handles low humidity with far less shrinking and gapping than solid hardwood.

Pricing questions we hear most
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes, anywhere in the Grand Valley: Grand Junction, Clifton, Palisade, Whitewater, Fruita, Loma, and Mack. Projects outside the Grand Valley, including Mesa, Collbran, De Beque, Gateway, and Glade Park, include an installer trip charge and may require a measure fee, figured at the federal mileage rate (currently $0.76/mile) for the round trip. The measure fee is credited toward your project if you go ahead with us.
Do you install tile?
No. We sell ceramic and porcelain tile as material only and don't offer tile installation.
Can I buy flooring without installation?
Yes. Turn off "I need installation" in the estimator to price material only, including tile, for pickup at our warehouse. We don't deliver.
Is sales tax included?
The estimator adds estimated sales tax on materials, based on your city or area and whether you're inside or outside city limits. Installation labor isn't taxed. The prices in the tables on this page are before tax.
Do you offer financing?
No. We accept cash, check, and all major credit cards.
How much of my flooring budget goes to labor vs. material?
It depends on the product. Carpet installs quickly, so labor is a smaller share of the total. Hard surfaces like LVP, laminate, and hardwood take more time, so labor is a bigger share. The pricing table above shows both.
What isn't included in the per-square-foot price?
Removal of old flooring, subfloor repair, stairs, furniture and appliance moving, and trim are priced separately. You'll find typical ranges for each under Extra Costs, and your written estimate will outline the ones that apply.
Why does my estimate include more flooring than my room size?
Every job needs extra material for cuts and seams. The estimator adds 10%, which covers most rooms for both carpet and hard surfaces. Diagonal or herringbone layouts need more, and exact quantities are confirmed at your site measure.
What should I know before you remove tile?
Tile removal is loud and dusty, and ceramic tile and thinset contain silica. Please read our Tile Removal Guide before your project. It covers dust safety, noise, how we protect your home, what we might find underneath, and how to prepare.
Can someone else supply or install the underlayment to save money?
No. Your new floor depends on what's underneath it, so we only install over underlayment that Carpetime supplies and installs. We don't install over underlayment supplied or installed by others.
Why do I need transition strips in doorways?
Many floating floors need room to expand and contract, and manufacturers set a maximum distance before a transition is required. When the installation guidelines call for transitions in doorways or large rooms, they're required to protect your floor and its warranty.
Will I get to choose which way my floor runs?
Yes. Before installation, we'll review which direction your flooring will run and where seams will fall, and ask you to sign off. Your installer may share a recommendation, too.
Do I need an asbestos test?
If we're removing glued-down vinyl or sheet vinyl, yes. Older vinyl and its adhesive can contain asbestos, so it has to be tested before it comes up.
How much is the deposit?
50% to schedule your project and order materials. The balance is due when installation is complete.
Can I cancel a special order?
Once a special-order product has been placed, it can't be canceled, returned, or refunded, and the deposit becomes non-refundable.
